PERMIT#: M-1981-148
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE:January 24,2020
OBSERVATIONS
This was a monitoring inspection of the Chieftain South Mine, a 98.5 acre 112c clay mine permitted by General
Shale Brick. This inspection was triggered by a citizen complaint of excessive windblown dust from the site
onto adjacent residential properties during recent periods of high wind. The complaint was received via e-
mail by the Division on January 13, 2020. DRMS contacted the permittee to set up an inspection of the site,
and was informed during that call that additional erosion control measures (hydro-seeding, tackifier, and
matting) were being installed on the week of January 20. DRMS scheduled a site inspection for Friday January
24, to confirm that the work had been completed.
DRMS met with site representative Jason McGraw on the morning of January 20 to tour the site and document
site conditions. As can be seen in the attached photos 1- 10, the seeding and erosion control work has been
recently completed. The soil stockpiles created by the excavation of the new surface drainage ditch, as well as
some other exposed areas of the site along the east and south boundaries of the permit area have been
addressed. The site entrance area (photo 1) has also been recently improved. This erosion control and
seeding should significantly reduce or eliminate the issue of windblown dust from the site in the future.
It should also be noted that ongoing residential development and expansion of the subdivision near the
southwest corner of the mine has also resulted in large areas of recent excavation and soil stockpiles that have
not been stabilized and may result in blowing dust (photos 9 and 10). Due the stabilization work recently
completed by the permittee and documented in this report, DRMS will consider the recent compliant of
windblown dust resolved.
No active mining was taking place during the inspection, and Mr. McGraw stated that the mine had been
utilizing materials from the existing stockpiles for the past several years (photos 2 and 3).
No other issues of concern were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Jason McGraw
General Shale Brick, Inc.
1845 W. Dartmouth Ave.
Denver, CO 80110
