Rernediation and Monitoring Measures for
NEWMONT
Cyanide Spills • • Releases
Sustainability and External Relations
c) For large areas of contamination, soil samples may be taken and analyzed for WAD
cyanide levels to verify contamination area limits.
d) All Affected soil shall be placed on the Squaw Gulch Valley Leach facility in
consultation with SER and processing personnel.
e) After cleanup is complete, take further soil samples and analyze them to verify that
total cleanup was successful and that when soil is <0.20 ppm WAD CN.
f) Replace removed soil with clean inert soil if necessary.
g) Seed and establish vegetation on the replaced soil if necessary.
h) Decontamination and washing of tools and equipment used in the incident shall be in
an area where wash water will enter one of the ADR sumps or the HGM sump.
a. Thoroughly wash all PVC and rubber PPE, shovels, Loader bucket, tyres etc
with process water initially, then rinse with fresh water. Following completion
of the recovery operation and removal of wet weather PPE, the disposable
overalls shall be burnt with the persons burning standing upwind.
i) If contaminated groundwater was observed above the 0.20 ppm WAD CN CC&V
would first identify the source of the contamination and the concentration of CN. If
groundwater remediation is necessary CC&V would implement one or more of the
following actions:
a. Slurry cut off wall
b. Pump back contaminated groundwater to the leach pads.
c. Injection wells to neutralize CN, neutralizing agent would be depended on
concentration of CN, water quality and geochemistry of the area.
d. Pump groundwater to a lined pond and allow uv light to break down the CN.
j) In the rare event that the only option for cleanup and remediation is neutralization,
CC&V stores calcium hypochlorite in several different locations throughout the mine
site. Detailed information on storage locations of Calcium Hypochlorite and the use of
calcium hypochlorite can be found in CC&V's Cyanide Code Procedures SOP
document dated 1/10/2017.
Note: Neutralization shall be considered as a last resort. Before using any
neutralizing agents the SER Department must be consulted.
5. Monitor(as needed)
If any process solution is released or tailings are released in transportation to the leach
pad confirmatory soil sampling analysis will be conducted by a certified lab after the
contaminated soil has been over excavated. Internal sample analysis can be utilized as
guidance for the cleanup efforts.
Soil Sampling:
• Collect soil samples from the remaining surface after over excavation
has occurred using jars supplied from the Laboratory.
• Label the jars with the Site ID name, and date/time collected.
• Fill sample jar(s) with the soil from the contaminated site. Number
samples and sample location will be highly depended based on the size
of the spill.
• Place the jars in a cooler with ice.
------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7-------------------------------------------------------------,
Department THIS DOCUMENT IS UNCONTROLLED IN HARDCOPY FORMAT Doc Id-NA-CCV-SER-SOP 2196
SER Date of This Issue: 9/282017 Date of Next Review-9/28/2020 Page 7 of 10
