J-12
Attachment A
Grazing Calculations
Initial stocking rate calculations were used for determining carrying capacity as outlined below.
1. Determine Total Production of Area
• USGS utilization for forage production on rangelands
2. Calculate total available forage
• Total available forage=Total Production * (Harvest efficiency)0.5 *Allotment Size
3. Determine Pounds per month intake for a 1,000-pound animal
• Intake=1,000-pound animal *80%of bodyweight
4. Calculate Proper Stocking Rate:
• Stocking Rate=Available Forage/Pounds Eaten per month
5. Convert for animal type you are using with an Animal Unit Equivalents(AUE)
• Stocking Rate/Animal Unit Equivalent
6. Determine number of animals that can be grazed over allotted time
• Number of animals=Animal Unit month for class of livestock/Number of months on allotment
Calculation Results for Stocking Rate
1. See Table in method section for forage production per acre per soil type
2. Total available forage - 6,185,390 total amount of forage on site * 0.5 (Harvest efficiency)
=3,092,695 total pounds available forage for grazing
3. Intake of forage by cattle-1,000 pounds(standard weight for grazing calculations) *80 percent of
body weight(typical amount eaten by cattle)=800 pounds/month of vegetation intake per animal
4. Stocking rate - 3,092,695 pounds available/800 pounds per month intake requirement
=3,866 animals per month
5. Animal unit month for class of livestock - 3,866 animals per month/1.4 animal equivalent
(represents 1,400-pound cow-calf combo)=2,761 animals/month
6. Number of animals per year-2,761 animals per month/12 months=230 animals that the Site can
support for 1 year of grazing.
Z:\Shared\Projects\11478\114782003 Keenesburg Mine No.2 Project\NS\State Mining Permit\100-Rangeland Cap
Report\Report\Attachments\Attachment A\2019-Keenesburg-Attachment A-Grazing Calculations.docx
Keenesburg No. 2 Mine_112 Reclamation Operation—November 22, 2019
