PERMIT#: M-1974-004
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE:November 19,2019
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection of the Specification Aggregate Quarry, operated by Martin Mareitta
(MM), conducted by Eric Scott of the Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety (DRMS). The site is located on
the west side of Highway 40 approximately 3 miles south of Golden CO and approximately% mile north of
Interstate 70. DRMS met with MM representatives Julie Mikulas and Phillip Courtney at the site office and
toured the site with them after a brief site safety presentation. This is a 325 acre site which produces
primarily construction aggregate, although there is also an asphalt plant and concrete batch plant located in
the SE corner of the permit area (photo 5). The currently approved post-mining land use for the site is
rangeland.
During the site visit DRMS noted that the site, on whole, appeared to be very well managed and was operation
in compliance with the approved mining and reclamation plans. Dust control was ongoing with both a water
truck and street sweeper during the inspection. The operator has also recently provided documentation from
the State Engineer's Office (SEO) that the main quarry reservoir has been verified as meeting the standards for
a "lined reservoir". This determination addresses several of the potential issues identified during the previous
inspection with respect to the water present in the pit.
One issue was identified that will require corrective action by the operator within the next 60 days. Unused
mining equipment (conveyor sections, etc.) was being stored/staged outside of the permit boundary in the
north-center of the permit near the Heritage Square "visual berm". All mining equipment will need to be
moved to remain within the currently approved permit boundary by the corrective action date listed on the
first page of this report. Care will also need to be taken to prevent the product stockpile from moving outside
of the permitted area in this location.
No other issues were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Julie Mikulas
Martin Marietta Materials,Inc.
1800 N.Taft Hill Road
Fort Collins, CO 80521
