EXHIBIT K CLIMATE INFORMATION
1. Introduction
The following section will describe the significant climatological factors for the Detroit City
Mine. Rain and snow amounts, and the time of year that these occur, are important as this affects
planting times and irrigation needs for grasses and trees that will be part of the final reclamation.
This exhibit was not required in the original I I0(1)permit but is included here in the spirit of
thoroughness.
2. General Information
The Detroit City Mine is located approximately 3 miles northwest of Alma, Colorado at an
elevation of approximately 11,500 feet. The area is classified as a Polar Tundra(ET) under the
Koppen Classification system.' This climate type is dominated by the winter season, and defined
solely upon temperature. Maximum temperatures range from 32' F to 500 F.2 Summers are very
short and the growing season is limited. The site is classified as USDA Hardiness Zone 5a,3 with
a growing season of approximately June 21 —July 31 to August 11 —August 20,4 a total of 12—
61 days. The National Weather Service operates the Climax, Colorado Weather Station (Station
ID 051660) 5 miles northwest of the Detroit City Mine on the continental divide at an elevation
of approximately 11,350 feet.5 Climatic conditions as recorded at Station 051660 would be
expected to be similar to conditions at the Detroit Cite Mine. The site of the Detroit City Mine
will be subjected to long, cold winters with copious amounts of snowfall. Summers will be short,
with a very limited growing season. Strong winds will occur during all times of the year. Strong
winds during the spring months may cause rapid drying of the soil surface, and care will need to
be taken to protect and nurture seeds and new grasses.
I http://koeppen-jzeiger.vu-wien.ac.at/present.htm#GooizieEarth
2 http://koeppen-veiger.vu-wien.ac.at/pdf/Paper 2006.pdf
3 https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx
4 https://www.weather.gov/bou/frostandfreezecolorado, https://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-
colorado-fi rst-frost-date-map.php
5 wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?col660
Greg I. icki and Associate#,PI.1 d'
October 2019 K-1
