Siebert <br />Consultant in Applied Earth Science <br />Highway 145 <br />Dolores Colorado 81323 <br />970.882.4034 <br />July 29, 2000 <br />Mr. Tom Bird <br />National King Coal <br />4424 County Road 120 <br />Hesperus, Colorado 81326 <br />SUBJECT: Crawford Residence Pre -Blast Inspection, Hesperus, Colorado <br />Dear Mr. Bird, <br />A pre -blast inspection was made for the Crawford residence. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford were <br />very helpful in reviewing the eight years it required to construct the house. A six foot <br />center shaft of eight inch reinforced concrete walls provides the internal support for <br />the first and second stories and concrete block for the third level. The construction is <br />unique in housing dominated by balloon type construction. Exposed joists locally cut <br />lumber. Reinforced concrete footings are 24 inches by 18 inches thick. Floor joists are 2 <br />inch by 8 inch local lumber on twenty four inch centers . The walls are log and the <br />house would be best described as a log house. The lower level and second story have <br />a floor plan that is similar to a post 1800 log house. <br />Each room was inspected for cracks, out of alignment walls, water marks, etc. and none <br />were observed with the exception of the concrete basement floor. A crack pattern of <br />cracks 1/16 of an inch or less were observed. The cracks are stable and do not have a <br />vertical offset. Cracks were spanned with a straight edge. Based on my prior experience <br />the cracks formed during the curing process. <br />The material used for the porch floor has cracked due to weathering. Other wodd used <br />has a few cracks which is normal. <br />In my experience with a similar type construction differential settlement will cause plast- <br />er walls to crack. The construction was generally stone foundations and a center <br />chimney. When concrete floors were added similar many had similiar crack patterns. <br />occurred. <br />Water supply is the ranch's one million gallon reservoir that is distributed by a 10 inch <br />supply line for both domestic and agricultural use. <br />The subject residence is sound and almost free of cosmetic and structural problems with <br />the exception of cracks in the concrete floor and porch floor decking that is an eastern <br />• hardwood. <br />
