D&P Gravel Pit
I conducted a site visit on 8/28/19 with Derek Duran to discuss noxious weed management at the D& P
Gravel Pit south of Craig.
The species of top concern growing onsite are:
• whitetop
• dalmation toadflax
• Scotch thistle
• Canada thistle
• cheatgrass
• musk thistle
Other species noted are:
• Russian thistle
' • prostrate knotweed
• curlycup gumweed
• tumble mustard
• field pennycress
• yellow sweetclover
• curly dock
• redroot pigweed
• lambsquarters
My treatment recommendation is as follows:
Treat areas with cheatgrass infestations with Glyphosate (Roundup)at 24 ounces/acre.Apply treatment
in early spring when cheatgrass is green and actively growing; preferably before other desirable
perennial grasses emerge. Fall retreatments may be conducted if cheatgrass becomes active again.
Treat the other listed species with Opensite Specialty Herbicide at 3.0 ounces/acre plus 32 ounces/acre
2,4-D Amine (41b). Multiple spot applications may have to be made as species may emerge at different
times. Apply this mix when weeds are green and actively growing and before seed set.
Always read, understand, and follow product label instructions when making herbicide applications.
The above recommendation is certainly not the only treatment option that would be effective on this
site. However, I believe it is a safe and cost effective option that will significantly reduce the species of
concern.Adjustments can always be made to the application timing or products used if desired results
are not achieved.
Jesse Schroeder
Moffat County Weed and Pest Manager
970-824-9184
