Sandy Acres Weed Management Plan
The Sandy Acres site (aka Henderson Development) was used as a gravel pit and
purchased by E-470 after mining operations had ceased. A pond formed because the
floor of the pit was below ground water elevation. In order to comply with Colorado
water law clean fill dirt was placed in the pit to an elevation of four feet above the
ground water level. The backfilling began in 2015 and was completed in the spring of
2016 and subsequently the area was seeded. In the fall of 2017 soil amendments were
added to areas where vegetation was not established and the whole area was reseeded.
Since the fall of 2017 the grasses have begun to establish but there are numerous areas
where noxious weeds are present. The goal of this plan is to establish desirable
vegetation and control noxious weeds. This plan is based on encouraging the desired
plant species(native grasses)rather than on simply eliminating noxious weeds. The
following sequence will be followed starting in the fall of 2019.
1) In the fall apply herbicides to control noxious weeds.
2) In late fall or early spring reseed bare areas.
3) In early to mid-spring apply herbicides to control noxious weeds.
4) In late spring to early summer mow the area.
5) The area will be monitored on a monthly basis for the remainder of the
summer/fall and herbicides will be applied if needed to control the noxious
weeds.
The type of herbicides applied will be based on the type of noxious weed(s) that are
being treated. After the establishment of desired plant species the area will be
managed in accordance with the practices utilized for the rest of E-470 property.
September 2019
