Nelson Mining Resource
Integrated Noxious Weed Management Plan
August 2019
Page 3
2.0 OVERVIEW OF TARGETED WEED SPECIES AND POTENTIAL
' INVASIVE WEED SPECIES
Noxious weeds in Colorado are categorized based on the extent of infestation within the state.
■ Colorado Noxious Weeds -List A: List A species are not well established in Colorado
are potentially a large problem to this state, and require mandatory eradication by local
' governing agencies. Prescribed techniques for management of List A species are hand
pulling, digging, or herbicide application. Mowing, grazing, and insect bio-control are not
' acceptable forms of management for these species.
■ Colorado Noxious Weeds - List B: List B species are common enough in parts of the
' state that eradication is not feasible, though the species are still recommended for
eradication, suppression, or containment depending on distribution and densities around
the state. Prevention of seed dispersal may be accomplished by mowing, hand pulling,
' tillage, grazing, or herbicide application.
■ Colorado Noxious Weeds - List C: List C species are widespread and well established.
' Control of List B and C species is recommended, but not required by the state. However,
local governing bodies may require management.
' The following sections list the weed species of concern and provide general descriptions and
information about the noxious weeds. A map depicting the location of noxious weeds and areas
for treatment at the Site is presented as Figure 2.
' 2.1 TARGETED WEED SPECIES
' The following table lists the noxious weeds species identified at the Site that are the primary targets
for management, management strategy (i.e., priority and goal), and extent of infestation. Copies
of the Targeted Weed Fact Sheets are provided in Appendix A.
1
Noxious Weed Species Identified State Management Designation Infestation Affected
(Scientific Name) List Priority Goal Density Acreage
' Saltcedar/Tamarisk
B 1st Elimination Light 0.5 acres
(Tamarix ramosissima)
' Russian Olive B 1 st Elimination Light 0.25 acres
Canada Thistle(Cirsium arvense) B 1 st Containment Medium 5 acres
' & Suppression
Musk Thistle(Carduus nutans) B 1 st Containment Medium 5 acres
& Suppression
' Cheatgrass C 2nd Suppression Heavy 7 acres
Common Mullein C 2nd Suppression Light 0.5 acres
