2019 Keeling Pit Noxious Weed Management Plan
By the Huerfano County Noxious Weed Department
mix provided in the original Reclamation Permit. Doing so will prevent further
site\topsoil erosion. Reseeding will need to comply with the specific herbicide product
label recommendations related to grass establishment intervals by species. When using
a broadcast method of reseeding, it is recommended to use twice the PLS rate as
indicated for seed drilling in the original Reclamation Permit.
E. MANGEMENT GOALS
The overall management goal of this plan is to stop the further introduction of viable seeds
and noxious plant species capable of regeneration within the site so as to comply with the
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety standards. The establishment of a resilient and
competitive native\desirable plant community will be necessary to ensure the long term
success of invasive plant exclusion.
F. TIMELINE FOR COMPLETION
A minimum of four years will be required to eradicate the species of greatest concern
(hoary cress, leafy spurge) within the mine site given the widespread distribution of both
species and the large amount of viable seed within the soil seed reserve. The other C list
species found on site will not be subject to eradication being that it is not a realistic
outcome given their widespread distribution throughout the surrounding area. The
ultimate management goal for these C list species will be containment and suppression.
Future weather conditions will greatly dictate the duration and success of needed
treatments. Seasons of exceptionally high precipitation such as this year(2019)will greatly
aid in the depletion of viable seed being that germination rates are higher, while an
exceptional drought year like 2018 will provide an overall setback as these species are
dormant and seedling depletion through germination is limited at best.
G. MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES
1. The overall reduction in infested acres of hoary cress.
2. The overall reduction in infested acres of leafy spurge.
3. The overall reduction in infested acres of C list species.
4. The creation and promotion of a resilient plant community capable of self-regeneration
that creates exclusion of undesirable noxious weed colonies.
5. The control\elimination of additional noxious weed species.
