Along the south side of the permit area there are several structures within 200
feet. These include Highway US-6, the Holy Cross Energy power poles, and the Stremme Gates
ditch. Each of these entities has been contacted by the permittee in an effort to secure structure
agreements between the operator and the structure owner. In the event that structure agreements
cannot be secured, United is submitting this geotechnical stability report to demonstrate that
mining at the Gypsum Ranch Pit will not damage these neighboring structures.
1. General Site Condition
The Gypsum Ranch Pit consists of a sand and gravel deposit being mined to a final depth of
roughly 80 feet. The mined out pit will daylight to the north when mining and reclamation area
completed. Final stable slopes of 3H:1 V will be built along the south side of the site. Currently
mining is roughly 75% across the site, west to east, and will continue mining eastwardly in the
immediate future. Along the south side of the site, where the mining activity has reached its
limits in that direction, the slope varies from final conditions (-3H:1 V)to recently mined
highwalls (-1 H:1 V).
Between the mining highwall and the edge of the property along the south side are berms built of
topsoil. These berms are installed when mining enters a new area, and stripped topsoil that is not
used in concurrent reclamation needs a storage point. Eventually these topsoil berms will be used
in final reclamation. Additionally, along the south edge of the mine, outside of the topsoil berms,
runs the Stremme Gates Ditch(in portions), a Holy Cross Energy power line on poles, a railroad,
and the Highway US-6. The highway and the railroad exist south of the power poles and ditch.
