Due to the presence of bears, CPW recommends that the mine owner/operator invest in bear-proof
trash receptacles or store garbage/food attractants in a solid locked storage shed. Feeding of all big
game species is illegal in Colorado. CPW recommends that no food attractants be left in areas
accessible to wildlife.
CPW recommends that any fencing installed in relation to the operation be "wildlife friendly"
construction. This fence design would include a maximum top wire height of 42"with at least 12"
spacing between the top two wires and a bottom wire, and at least 16" above the ground to allow
passage of young animals. It is also recommended that the top and bottom wires be a twisted barbless
type, or smooth wire construction. White flagging or white nylon fencing may also be placed on the
top and bottom wires to increase visibility.
CPW recommends the operator monitor and remove any invasive plant species as ground disturbance
proceeds. The Colorado Weed Management Association provides the booklet "Noxious Weeds of
Colorado" that provides information on the identification and management of noxious weeds in
Colorado.
Thank you for the opportunity to Comment. Please contact CPW at 719-530-5520 if we can be of
further assistance.
Sincerely,
James L. Aragon
Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Area Wildlife Manager
