Homestake Mining Company May 10,2019
Regular(112d)Operation Reclamation Permit Application Package
2.0 MINE DESCRIPTION
2.1. Mine Location
The Mine is located in the Sawatch Range of Saguache County within the Gunnison National
Forest, in a high alpine environment with elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (ft) above
mean sea level (amsl). The site is five miles East of Sargents, Colorado and 18 miles southwest
of Salida, Colorado (see Exhibit B Map B-01 and Figure 3-1). Access to the site from Sargents is
via the unpaved Marshall Pass Road (County road XX32) and then via USFS Roads 243 and
243.2A.
For purposes of this amendment, the mining related surface disturbances have been subdivided
into manageable operable units (OUs)that define the physical boundaries or limits between areas
to allow for incremental and progressive reclamation. The proposed OUs used in developing this
amended Reclamation Plan were defined as follows, are represented on Exhibit B Maps B-02, B-
03A and B-03B:
1. OU 1 North Pit, which consists of the generally reclaimed North Pit slopes, partially
backfilled and revegetated North Pit, North Pit Ditch, North Pit Lake, tension cracks,
internal access roads, three inclinometers and 81 slope monitoring points.
2. OU 2 South Pit,which consists of the backfilled and revegetated South Pit, South Pit Ditch,
tension cracks, internal access roads, 24 slope monitoring points. The two water
management systems areas are included as part of OU 5.
3. OU 3 Indian Rock Dump (IRD), which consists of a reclaimed cross valley fill rock dump
slope, Sericite Clay stockpile, Low Grade ore stockpile, internal access roads, three
inclinometers and three slope monitoring points.
4. OU 4 Tie Camp Rock Dump (TCRD), which consists of a reclaimed cross-valley fill rock
dump slope, Disposal cell, Low Grade ore stockpile and internal access roads.
5. OU 5 Water Management Systems (WMS) A, B and C which consists of open surface
water drainages, the reclaimed Radium Treatment Plant (RTP), the former Water
Treatment Plant (consisting of a sand filter plant on the southwest side of the Sediment
Dam), and Sediment Pond. While the reclaimed Pinnacle Adit and workings are physically
located within the South Pit OU limits, it is considered part of the WMS OU due to the
water quality issues.
6. OU 6 Sandstone Quarry.
7. OU 7 Limestone Quarry.
8. OU 8 Shop Building, Fuel Storage and Equipment.
9. OU 9 Mill Site and Stormwater Pond.
10. OU 10 Haul and Access Roads, which consists of the access road to the Mine, and internal
haul and access roads. that are not bound within the other OUs.
2.2. Site History
Uranium was discovered in the area in 1955 and was followed by mineral extraction starting in
1957 (HMC, 2005). Mineral extraction began with underground mine development. Pinnacle
Exploration Company (Pinnacle) was the initial operator, mining ore from the Pitch Tunnel (1958
EXHIBIT E-RULE 6.4.5(AMENDED RECLAMATION PLAN) Page 3
HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY
