Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
To: Rob Zuber
From: Janet Binns
CC: Jason Musick
Date: June 28, 2019
Re: Bowie No. 2, TR119
The Division has received a technical revision (TRI 19) for Bowie No. 2 Mine. TR119
proposes to install a new culvert C-C27, under the haul road, and direct runoff from the
haul road ditch D-B3, under the haul road to ditch D-C21. This change will cut off flow
to ditch D-B6.
Map 20 Sedimentation Control Plan shows culverts and ditches, as does Map 21-2
This spring, 2019, the slope to the northwest of Portal B had a small slump. The slump
damaged ditch D-B6. The operator directed runoff away from ditch D-B6 to keep water
out of the head scarp of the slump, and ran a dip across the haul road at the curve to direct
the runoff into ditch D-C21. Flow in this ditch system can be directed either into Pond B
or Pond C lower down in the sediment control system at the "pond diversion structure".
This temporary measure was effective in keeping water away from the slump. I directed
Bowie Resources to make this a more permanent design. Currently the operation is
inactive, but driving through the dip with equipment isn't the best fix. TR119 is the
design to put a culvert in this spot.
I am requesting your assistance in reviewing the design, and flow documentation BRL
provided for this new culvert, and rerouting of the flow that used to report to ditch D-B6.
The revision was considered complete on June 28, 2019, so an adequacy letter is due out
by July 28, 2019. I will be out of the office on July 26th, so a memo by July 23rd should
allow me to forward any concerns you may have to the operator. Thank you for your
help.
