Cascajo Series
The Cascajo series consists of very gravelly soils on nn i
escarpiinent above the Arkan as Riven•. The gravel was de-
posited by the Arkansas Rirer. The escarpment is between
the present river bottom and old river terraces, which are
now part of the ui)lallds. At the foot of the escarpment are
many outcrops of soft, light yellowish-brown, very linty
shale.
The surface 1,Lyer of these soilsis gray ish-brown gravelly E
loam about 5 inches thick. This layer generally is free of
lime.
Below the surface layer is pale-brown, limy, gravelly
loamy sand. The lower surface of the gravel is coated with
lime.
Casmio soils are escessi% ' drained and are low in
natural fertility. If overgrazed, they are highly suscepti-
ble to-rater erosion.
These soils are used for range. The native range plants
are blue granna, side-oats grama, sand dropseed, needle-
and-thread, cliollar cactus, rabbitbrush, yucca, and four-
Tvino, saltbusli. The escarpment is a• good source of com-
inercial gravel.
Representative profile in a.gravel pit on the north side
of the Arkansas Ricer, along the highway north of
Mannzanola.
31-0 to 5 inches, grayish-brown (10YR 5/2) grarelly loam,
dart; grayish brown (10YR 4/2) when moist; mod-
erate, inedium, crumb structure; soft when dry, very
friable when moist; noncalcareous; clear, smooth
boundary.
Cca-5 to 60 inches, pale-brown (10YR 0/3) gravelly loamy
sand, brown (10YR 5/3) rrhea moist; single grain;
loose rhea dry or moist; calcareous; loner surface
of gravel coated with llme carbonate,-Particularly in f
the uppermost part of this horizon. {
The surface layer is 4 to 0 inches thick.
Cascaio soils are associated with Otero soils, but they are
steeper and more grarelly than those soils. They are steeper and
coarser textured than Harrey soils.
Cascajo soils and Gravelly Iand (5 to 25 percent -
slopes) (Co).—The surface layer of the Cascajo soils -
ranges from gravelly loans to very gravelly sandy loam.
The slope ranges from 5 to 25 percent, but most, of the
acreage has a slope of more than 10 percent. Some areas
of this comple-x are deeply cut by V-shaped drainageNvays,
a few of which contain flowing springs. Include in the
areas mapped are in onerous commercial gravel pits.
This complet,is used for range. 'Most of the range is
overgrazed. The native plants are cholla, cactus, prickly-
pear, and sand dropseed. (Nonirrigated capAbility unit
VTIs-1; Gravel Breaks range site)
