species distribution and abundance for the general area, and in
some cases, site specific information for the area to be used for
surface facilities. Specific attention was given to ecologically
sensitive, recreationally and commercially important, and threaten-
ed and endangered species.
To complement existing information, site reconnaissance surveys
were conducted on May 11, June 28 and 30, and July 18 to 21, 1983.
An on-site overview was conducted by DOW personnel on June 29.
These visits provided habitat evaluation (including identification
of sensitive or important areas), a raptor nesting survey, and
general species occurrence. Habitat evaluations were made by
sampling. Observations were made by traversing the site by vehicle
and on foot. Species sitings, scat, tracks, nests or dens, and
other signs were recorded. No statistical data was collected
during reconnaissance surveys.
3.7.1 Permit Area
The mine permit area is located on approximately 2640 acres
bisected by the east-west oriented Grand Hogback (Coal Ridge).
Elevations of the area range from 5600 feet MSL along the Colorado
River to 8269 feet at the peak of Horse Mountain. In this area,
the Hogback acts as a dividing point for human activity and land
use. On the north side, human disturbance adjacent to the proposed
mine facilities exists in the form of the D&RG Railroad and
Highways 6 and I-70; the Riverbend Subdivision with approximately
24 houses; Glenwood Springs land fill area; agricultural production
of hay and livestock grazing; and Colorado River recreational
activities. The southside of the Hogback has limited access due to
land ownership and has been influenced primarily by agricultural
hay production and grazing activities.

The mine permit area is surrounded by a variety of wildlife
habitats ranging from coniferous and pinyon-juniper forests, •
NCEC - Coal Ridge #1 3-76 ABCj1145/900301
