were combined into three river segments. In summary, sucker and carp species make up the bulk
of numbers from all stations. It is in the other species that a definite change occurs moving down
stream. The changes observed are indicative of a change in environment from a cold water type
fishery with a high percentage of trout to a warm water type fishery with green sunfish and carp.
The NCEC site is adjacent to the river in the upper portion of this transition zone.
As previously mentioned, South Canyon and Alkali Creeks have been classified as "No Fishery"
streams following stream surveys conducted by DOW (1978d, 1980c).
3.7.6 Threatened and Endangered Species
The NCEC permit area is within the range of four mammal, four bird, and five fish species
classified as threatened and endangered(T&E) by the Federal Government(USFWS, 1980)or
the State of Colorado (Torres et al. 1978) or by both. Three criteria for selecting these thirteen
species are: actual observations within, or adjacent to,the mine permit area; known distribution
in this section of Colorado (Armstrong 1972; Bailey and Niedrach 1965; Bissell 1972; Burt
1976; Robbins et al. 1966; Stebbins 1966); and the presence of essential habitat for these species
as defined by Torres et al. (1978). USFWS and DOW have been contacted for their input and
interest concerning an updated list of species in the project area. USFWS has responded with a
letter(Appendix 3.7-2)which outlines their species of interest. The following paragraphs provide
information concerning T&E species and assessment of project related impacts on those species.
A September 9, 2011, threatened and endangered species inventory update is located in
Appendix 3.7-2.
The Fish and Wildlife Service provided an updated threatened and endangered species inventory
by letter dated April 5, 2019. The inventory is located in Appendix 3.7-2.
3.7.6.1 Mammals
Wolverine (Gulo gulo). State Endangered Species. The wolverine's habitat requirements are
virtually unknown.
