A Colorado Parks and Wildlife has reviewed the information
and the site and determined that seed mixture for Zone 2 Foothills (Lower
Montane) might be the most applicable. Although not a major water course this
tributary area drains into the Purgatoire River and downstream siltation should
always be a consideration.
It is imperative that any reclamation be complete as soon as possible for the most
effective establishment of ground cover to prevent erosion. Again, although
minimal in ecosystem stature, this side coulee drainage provides a travel quarter
for predator/prey relationship such as mountain lions and bears and also for deer,
elk and small game species moving from cover to the riparian zones. In that regard
establishment of browse species such as mountain mahogany and narrow leaf
cottonwood could be a positive addition.
Although not required, consideration of possible gabion rock structures to slow
water movement during periods of flash flood events through that area might also
be a constructive addition. The cumulative effect of water movement through the
side drainages becomes a measurable issue for siltation in Trinidad Lake which
Jeff Ver Steeg,Acting Director,Colorado Parks and Wildlife•Parks and Wildlife Commission:Robert W.Bray•Matthew Burkett•Charles Garcia•Marie Haskettoo
Carrie Besnette Hauser•John Howard,Chair•Marvin McDaniel•Colleen Peppier.Jennifer Rieke Taylor•James Vigil,Secretary•Michelle Zimmerman,Vice-Chair
