PERMIT#: M-1977-493
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:ECS
INSPECTION DATE: May 8,2019
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection for the Climax molybdenum mine, a 112d -3 hard rock mine operated
by the Climax Molybdenum Company—a division of Freeport McMoRan. The inspection was conducted by
DRMS representative Eric Scott. DRMS arrived on-site at approximately 0930 and met with Climax
representatives James Haag and Diana Keltz after signing in with site security.
Due to extensive snow cover, this inspection was somewhat abbreviated and consisted of site discussion with
Climax personnel, followed by a follow up-inspection of several of the pump stations utilized across the site.
DRMS and Climax briefly discussed several issues including: pH values at monitoring well MW2 and possible
follow up actions, issues related to TR29 currently under review by DRMS, potential changes to the handling/
disposal of TPH contaminated soils, and other ongoing site activities.
DRMS then accompanied Climax personnel to the Storke and Mayflower wastewater pump stations to check
on some minor leaks that were identified during previous inspections. DRMS observed a slight leak from the
#1 pump at the Mayflower station, but the previous leak at that facility had been addressed. The leak at the
Storke yard station has not yet been repaired, but has been characterized by Climax and will need to be
addressed during the summer work season. The#4 pump fitting in the Storke wastewater pump station was
also observed to be leaking a bit at the time of the inspection. It is important to note that any impacted water
leaking from inside these pumping facilities is captured and recirculated, and not released into the
environment untreated.
DRMS observed at the time of the inspection, that snow was being cleared from the beach area of the
Mayflower tailings dam prior to tailings discharge into the beach area. An area was also being cleared
immediately east of the water treatment facility to serve as a staging/laydown area for the materials to be
used in the upgrade of the West Interceptor ditch this summer. DRMS then observed the waste storage
building and general conditions in the surrounding mill yard area before returning to the site offices and
departing the site.
No issues of concern were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
James Haag
Climax Molybdenum Company
Highway 91,Fremont Pass
Climax, CO 80429
