The inspection report included two
corrective actions and several observations. A response to each is provided in the text below.
Correction Action#1 -Hydrologic Balance:
By the corrective action date, the operator shall sample the ponded water observed during the inspection
between Ralston Creek and the North Waste Rock Pile (detailed in the report) and submit the results to the
Division along with any additional relevant monitoring data. This report shall include an analysis of the data,
comparing it to data obtained from the upgradient and downgradient monitoring locations, identification and
quantification of the contaminant source(s), and a plan of action to prevent contaminated surface and
groundwater from leaving the affected lands. If the plan of action involves changes to the approved mining
and/or reclamation plans,it should be submitted as a Technical Revisions or Amendment application with the
appropriate fee.
Response:
On March 21,2019 and March 25,2019 surface water samples were collected from four locations along Ralston
Creek at the Schwartzwalder Mine site. Table 1 below summarizes the sample locations, sample dates, water
quality field parameters, and concentration of total and dissolved uranium. The electronic data deliverable
(EDD) Excel files and analytical data reports are attached to this submittal. The attached figure shows the
approximate corrective action sample locations.
One sample location,SW-GREEN-POOL exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA)
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 0.03mg/L of uranium. This sample was collected from standing
stagnant water, as indicated by the elevated temperature field parameter. This stagnant pool may have
resulted from several sources: snow melt or run off from the adjacent access road, snow melt or run off from
the adjacent north waste rock pile, surface water flow from Ralston Creek, shallow alluvial flow upgradient of
the sample location,or some combination of water from these upgradient areas. The most likely up-gradient
source is surface flows on to the North Waste Rock Pile. A revised design and detailed schedule for the
installation of the surface water control structure at the North Waste Rock Pile is provided under separate
cover in Technical Revision#28 to Mine Land Reclamation Permit M-1977-300.
