CPW would be happy to discuss increasing recreational
values at this location for the public if the surface owners are amenable.
If fishing opportunity is sought on these lakes in the future, stocking permits would need to be obtained
through CPW, and stocking of non-native species including smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye
would be prohibited. This gravel pit could provide a great angling opportunity for species such as
largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill or yellow perch, and CPW would be happy to discuss stocking
options with the gravel pit owner. Excluding any connectivity with the Uncompahgre and Gunnison
Rivers to prevent escapement of any stocked warmwater fish species would be necessary. CPW and
USFWS recommend berm heights of 5.5 feet above the ordinary high water line along with screening of
any outflowing water to prevent escapement of stocked warmwater species.
Impact Avoidance,Minimization,and Mitigation Recommendations:
Given the high quality wildlife habitat and the diversity of species utilizing the project site and
surrounding area, and based on a site-specific evaluation of the proposed project and associated
activities at the site, CPW recommends the following to avoid, minimize, and mitigate potential
project impacts to wildlife.
• Contact. USFWS for more in'ormation of Threatened and Er dangered Species and their Critical
Habitats:
t Avoid stocking smal.lmouth bass, walleye, northern pike or burbot in the gravel pit, if a fishery is
established;
Work with CPW for any fish stocking efforts related to starting a sport-fishery;
• Due to wintering; h,ald eagles within th;r r^rc iect arr'a, CP+A' recommends a preconstruction survey
for bald eagle active winter night roosts sites between November 15 and March 15. if a night
roost is located du:ing i survey please contact CPW for additional best management practices
to minimize impacts tc v<~nte~ing bald eagles prior to the commencement of construction
activities;
• Control erosion &r d sedimentation in the Gunnison river from spoils. Repair incised channels
where excessive erosion and sedimentation is occurring;
Increase planting of native cottonwood and willows around _he ponds to enhance the value for
wildlife.
If dewaterina is to occur, do not dis-harge water directly bark into to the stream, filter sediment
out of discharge water by utilizing a sedimentation bag or ether means to remove sediment;
SAIa or.nrn;Fr, t4,;.- r, .r(-. r.:M. /.......--.nn♦ nn F4.7 F..:-;ira.. 1#. -, 6.w..n n nrr:...... _. __.t.17t......
schedule a site visit io discuFs*pcssihle alternative recomrnendsti ns to those that we have provided,
please contact District Wildlife Manager, Mark Richman at 970.209-2?70.
