Keenesburg Mine 2018 Vegetation Monitoring Report
one a cool season grass. None of the four species may comprise greater than 400 o relative cover
nor less than 3% relative cover. Vegetation species which may be used in the calculation of
species composition may be any plant species that is not defined as a noxious or prohibited plant
species and may be native or introduced.
3.1 2018 Revegetation Success Standards
The following standards were calculated for vegetation cover and herbaceous production using
the September 2017 through July 2018 precipitation (14.9 inches) in the permitted predictive
equations.
1. Vegetation Cover Standard = 37.3% (90% Standard = 33.6%)
2. Herbaceous Production Standard = 151.2 g/m2 (90% Standard =136.1 g/m2)
4 2017-2018 PRECIPITATION
The climate of the mine and surrounding area is typical of the region and characterized by cold
winters and hot, dry summers. CEC has collected local precipitation data at the mine since 1984;
however, only data from 1993 — 2018 is presented here to correspond with the duration of
vegetation monitoring (Appendix D). Average precipitation is generally lowest during the late
fall and winter (October through March) and peaks in April through June (Figure 7).
The Keenesburg Mine Reclamation Permit specifies the use of onsite precipitation from
September to July in calculating the vegetation cover and herbaceous production standards. Total
cumulative precipitation for the period from September 2017 - July 2018 was 14.9 inches. This
represents 124% of the average precipitation amount for the same period (1993-2017). The
pattern and timing of the precipitation was generally similar to the average; however, the peak
fell later than usual in June and was greater (Figure 7).
Figure 7: 2017-2018 Precipitation and Average Annual Precipitation
2017-2018 Precipitation
— — Average (1993-2017)
a
Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Mar
Apr May Jun Jul Aug
Habitat Management, Inc. 11 October 2018
