Ne Date: I/5/1,9
SOLUTIONS* IN CORPORATE D
MWOM Checked By:_ -- Date:!-
Calculation Documentation
Problem Statement:
Loveland Ready-Mix Concrete Inc. (LRM) received approval from the agencies to mine the Knox Pit
at their LaPorte Operations. Dewatering during the initial part of Phase 1 may cause significant
groundwater drawdown beneath the Tilley property, which is located west of the Knox Pit. The
Tilley's are concerned that drawdown could affect their trees if drawdown persists over the growing
season. LRM proposed a conceptual mitigation strategy to reduce drawdown during the Phase 1
operations.
Objectives:
1. Evaluate the conceptual mitigation strategy (i.e., reverse French drains or "Infiltrators")to
determine their
a. Size and location
b. Potential effectiveness
Approach:
1. Build an analytical element groundwater sub-model from the numerical groundwater flow
model for ease of calculation
2. Use the sub-model to test that the increase in head at the infiltrator (located coincident to
the relocated West Fort Collins Water District water line) provides adequate mitigation
3. Back-calculate the flow capacity of the infiltrator to ensure it has adequate capacity
Data and Assumptions:
1. Numerical groundwaterflow
model 6 In.
