3.06 PLACING AND COMPACTING
A. Cutoff Trench and Compacted Embankment Fill
The earthfill material shall be placed in the embankment in continuous and approximately
horizontal layers, not more than 9"loose lift thickness. The combined excavation and placing
operations shall be such that the materials will be sufficiently blended to secure the best
practicable degree of compaction and stability. To achieve sufficient blending,a disc, plow, tilted
blade,or other method approved by the Design Engineer will be required during placement of any
embankment fill.
The material shall be compacted to a minimum of 95%of the Standard Proctor as described in
ASTM D698. The method of compaction shall be submitted to the Design Engineer for approval.
Equipment for compacting and zone IA, 1B,and 2 shall be capable of effectively achieving the
required density for the entire depth of the lift being placed as well as providing a suitable bonding
surface between lifts.
When each layer of material has been conditioned to have the specified moisture,it shall be
compacted with a vibrating sheepsfoot roller. The compacted density shall be essentially uniform
throughout the layer.
C. Upstream Slope Liner Face
The upstream slope liner face shall be cut to the lines and grades shown on the detail drawings.
After the upstream embankment is brought to final grade, the slope shall be compacted and
finished by"tracking"a D-9 Caterpillar(or approved equal)bulldozer up and down the slope.
END OF SECTION
Section 02290-Page 6 of 6 6/10
