Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
To: Zack Trujillo
From: Janet Binns
CC: Jason Musick
Date: February 21, 2019
Re: Bowie No. 2, TR118

The Division has received a technical revision (TR118) for Bowie No. 2 Mine. The mine
is and underground mine in temporary cessation and no mining or mining activity is
occurring on the ground. Activities occurring on the site are limited to maintenance,
weed management and monitoring activities.
Coal effuse pile, Gob Pile 33, had previously been approved to accept considerably more
refuse material, TR-105, of 1,135,000.cubic yards. The mine has ceased coal extraction,
and has no immediate plans to resume mining or washing coal. Therefore, the operator
does not anticipate adding additional coal refuse material to Gob #3 coal refuse pile. The
operator is currently re-compacting portions of the pile, and does not anticipate more than
750,000 cubic yards of refuse material on this pile. This will also reduce the overall
height of Gob pile #3. The operator notes that Gob Pile #3 will be constructed as
previously approved with TR-84 (AC 7/31/2014).
Please review the application for compliance with Rules 4.10 and 4.11. I will place a
PDF file of the application in V:Coal/JHB/Bowie #2/TR118A, and V:Coal/JHB/Bowie
#2/TR118B. If you prefer to review hard copies, I have one copy in my office.
The revision was deemed complete on February 21, 2018. A preliminary adequacy letter
will be sent to the operator by March 23, 2019. Please let me know of any concerns or
questions you have for the operator prior to that date. Thank you for your assistance.
