Environmental Plantings and Windbreaks---Elbert County.Colorado,Western Part Exhibit"J"
Environmental Plantings and Windbreaks
Windbreaks protect livestock,buildings,yards,fruit trees,gardens,and cropland
from wind and snow; help to keep snow on fields;and provide food and cover for
wildlife. Field windbreaks are narrow plantings made at right angles to the
prevailing wind and at specific intervals across the field. The interval depends on
the erodibility of the soil
Environmental plantings help to beautify and screen houses and other buildings
and to abate noise, The plants, mostly evergreen shrubs and trees, are closely
spaced To ensure plant survival, a healthy planting stock of suitable species
should be planted properly on a well prepared site and maintained in good
condition
This table shows the height that locally grown trees and shrubs are expected to
reach in 20 years on soils in the survey area. The estimates are based on
measurements and observation of established plantings that have been given
adequate care. They can be used as a guide in planning windbreaks and
screens.Additional information on planning windbreaks and screens and planting
and caring for trees and shrubs can be obtained from the local office of the
Natural Resources Conservation Service or of the Cooperative Extension Service
or from a commercial nursery.
Report—Environmental Plantings and Windbreaks
Environmental Plantings and Windbreaks-Elbert County,Colorado,Western Part
Map symbol and Trees having predicted 20-year average height of
soil name ------ ---
8 feet or less >8 to 15 feet _ >15 to 25 feet i >25 to 35 feet >35 feet
I1—Brussett loam,
4 to 8 percent
slopes
Brussett Skunkbush sumac Rocky mountain — Ponderosa pine --
Common lilac juniper Siberian elm
23—Haplustolls,
loamy,nearly
level'
Haplustolls,loamy, — — — —
nearly level
28—Kettle-Rock
outcrop complex
15 to 65 percent
slopes
Kettle — — — — —
Rock outcrop
Natural Resources Web Soil Survey 4/1612 0 1 8
""'° Conservation Service National Cooperative Sod Survey Page 1 of 2
