Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
To: Rob Zuber
From: Janet Binns
CC: Jason Musick
Date: December 21, 2018
Re: Bowie No. 2, TR117

The Division has received a technical revision (TR117) for Bowie No. 2 Mine. The mine
is and underground mine in temporary cessation and no mining or mining activity is
occurring on the ground. Activities occurring on the site are limited to maintenance,
weed management and monitoring activities. Most of the infrastructure remains, though
the ventilation shafts have been sealed, and the D-seam and B-seam portals have been
temporarily sealed. The approved water monitoring plan can be found in Permit section
2.05.
BRL is proposing to reduce Groundwater monitoring to one full suite per year. BRL is
proposing to reduce full suite water quality monitoring from twice per year to once per
year for Hubbard Creek and Terror Creek sites D34-14 and HUB-LOW (map 9), Fire
Mountain Canal from two times per year to one time per year, List 1, Freeman, Sheep
Corral, and Dove Gulch. (Map 9) List 1.
BRL proposes to conduct full suite water sampling on the North Fork of the Gunnison
River, to only one time per year, and sample during either the second or fourth quarter.
BRL currently conducts full suite sampling at this site semi-annually. BRL will continue
to conduct List 2 sampling at this location every August.
TR117 proposes to reduce Full Suite water sampling on Stevens Gulch SW-11 and SW-5,
West Terror Creek, SW-1 and SW-2Terror Creek D-32, SW-2, D21-1, and Terror Ditch
SW-10. from two to one time per year.
BRL also proposes to reduce sampling of Alluvial Wells, 1 through 9, 11, 12, 14 through
17, to one time per year for full suite sampling.
Please review these proposed water-sampling reductions for compliance with Rule
4.05.13. Will the proposed reduction of monitoring still allow the Division to adequately
evaluate water quality trends over time?
The revision was deemed complete on December 21, 2018. A preliminary adequacy
letter will be sent to the operator by January 20, 2019. Please let me know of any
concerns or questions you have for the operator prior to that date. Thank you for your
assistance.
