agricultural community is active in the regional area. Agriculture takes place not only in the fertile river bottom areas
but also on the sagebrush-dominated hillsides, which have been cleared to allow for a dryland wheat industry.
Vegetation communities, which have been disturbed by EC operations, are listed below:
• Sagebrush
• Cottonwood-willow (Riparian)
• Dryland wheat (Cropland)
• Irrigated hay fields (Cropland)
Only a minor amount of mining disturbance effects the irrigated hay fields located within [he permit boundary. A
majority of the mining disturbance occurs in the sagebrush community.
The Vegetation Map (Map 20) depicts the vegetation communities found within EC's pemtit boundaries. Sufficient
adjacent area is included to allow assessment of the vegetation communities for use as important fish and wildlife
habitat. A list of vegetation communities and acres of diswrbance within the permit boundary is presented on Table
35, List of Disturbed Areas, Associated Acreage, and Representative Vegetation Communities.
Vegetation Community Description
The following quantitative discussion is a description of the vegetative resources found within the EC permit area and
is based upon fieldwork conducted during the 1981 growing season. The field sampling was conducted during the
period between July 13 and August 17, 1981. The only exception to this sampling period was for productivity
measurements obtained for harvested crops.
Four (4) sampling sites were chosen which reflect the vegetation typically found on slopes with an eastern, northern,
and southern exposure. Each site had approximately the same elevation and soils. The four (4) sampling sites are
described as follows:
Sagebrush community on east facing slope
Sagebrush community on north facing slope
Reclaimed community on north facing slope
Sagebrush community on south facing slope
Sagebrush community on east facing slope. The first vegetation community to be discussed is the sagebrush
community found on an easi-facing slope. The sampled area within [his vegetation community varies in elevation
from 6,175 feet to 6,300 feet. The slope varies from 2 H:1V to 3H:1V. The soil found in the sample area is
Torriorthents-rock outcrop complex (25 - 65 percent slopes) and is typically shallow. This is due to the steep slopes
and near surface bedrock.
The sampled area is classified as a big sagebrush community having a density of approximately 5,000 individuals per
acre. Other shrubs found within the sample area include Douglas and Rubber rabbit brush. Perennial (orbs present in
the sampled area include Globemallow, Rockress, Milkvetch, Daisy, and Buckwheat. Perennial grasses present in the
sampled azea include Western wheatgrass, June grass, Indian ricegrass, Blue grass, and Squirrel tail.
Sagebrush community on north facing s)oQe. The second vegetation community sampled is the sagebrush community
located on anorth-facing slope. The sampled area within this vegetation community varies in elevation from 6,325
fee[ to 6,455 feet. The slope varies from 15H:1V to 4H:1V. These slopes are much flatter than those found on the
east facing sampled area. Soils found within this sampled area include Turret sandy loam, and Kloten loam. These
soils are deeper and better developed than the soil found on the east-facing slope (Torriorthents-rock outcrop
complex). Likewise, a visual inspection of this sampled area reveals better cover and production as opposed to the
Permit Revision 04-34 2.04-28 Revised 7/2/04
