During
prior years surveys in the Deep Creek and Coal Creek Mesa areas marten tracks were
commonly encountered. Tracks indicate there is a good red squirrel population in the area
which is one of the primary prey species for marten in the winter. During the non snow
periods prey in the form of deer mice and voles is abundant. There is also the opportunity
for marten to prey upon small bird species.
Peregrine falcon: During the four year period and in prior years, peregrine falcons were
observed in the general area. These birds were all observed during the migration period.
Suitable nesting habitat for these birds is lacking in or near the LMA. There is suitable
foraging habitat, but the lack of nearby nesting habitat reduces the chances of the birds
occurring in the area on a regular basis.
Northern Goshawk: Prior to summer of 2010 goshawks (usually single birds) had been
observed numerous times while conducting habitat and wildlife surveys for other
exploration projects in the area to the north and northeast of the LMA, but no nests were
ever located. In July of 2010 three nests that appeared to be goshawk nests, were located
in large aspen trees on a bench in the LMA just above the Deep Creek Slide area. The
nest trees are equal in height and adjacent to large Englemann spruce trees. Habitat
structure where these nests are found is very similar to habitat conditions and elevations
at other goshawk nest complexes in the North Fork Valley. The general area where these
nests sites are located is the common corner of Sections 11, 12, 13 &14, T 145, R90W.
Two of the nests are located within the COC -67232 lease modification area. No birds
were observed at or in the near vicinity of the nest sites at that time or during subsequent
site visits in 2010. These nests have been monitored each year since that time for activity.
No birds were observed at the nest sites nor was there any sign of recent activity in 2011
or 2012. In 2010 and 2011, single goshawks were observed north and cast of the LMA. In
2012, no goshawks were observed during any of the surveys.
All three nests are beginning to deteriorate, and in one case, the aspen where a nest is
located is dying. Throughout this area many of the mature and over mature aspens are
dying. In addition, many spruce -fir are mature and for a variety of reasons many of these
trees are dying or have fallen. The loss of suitable nesting trees could have an effect on
use of the area for nesting by goshawks. In addition, many of the ponds that were full in
14
