PERMIT#:M-1990r148
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:AME
INSPECTION DATE:October 10,2018 t
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the Gray Pit(Permit No. M-1990-148) conducted by Amy
Eschberger of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety(Division). Mr. Rick Spady represented the
operator during the inspection. The site is located approximately 15 miles northwest of Haswell, Colorado in
Kiowa County. Access to the site is from the west off Co Rd 7. Photos 1-8 taken during the inspection are
included with this report.
This is a 110c operation permitted for 9.7 acres to mine sand and gravel from the creek bed of Adobe Creek(see
enclosed mining plan map). The permit area includes an approximate 2,000 foot section of the creek where sand
and gravel is extracted from work basins and directly hauled off site for use or stockpiled on the western creek
bank until needed. The excavation basins are approximately 3-5 feet deep with inlets and outlets that allow the
creek to flow through the basins to deposit sand and gravel. The operation accesses the creek bed via a trail that
runs along the western side of the creek.
The approved post-mining land use for the site is rangeland. Reclamation of the site will include grading all
disturbed slopes to 2H:1 V or flatter, seeding the creek banks and trail road with a native grass mixture, and
planting saline-tolerant willows(Coyote and Peachleaf) along the disturbed creek banks at a rate of five trees
per acre. Any excavated basins that remain will naturally fill in with sediment once mining has ceased.
The site was not active during the inspection. A permit sign was posted at the main site entrance. The corners of
the permit boundary were delineated with T-posts. A small material stockpile was being temporarily stored on
the western creek bank. The creek was not flowing during the inspection. However, pools of water were present
in portions of the creek due to a recent storm event. The operation is currently maintaining two main work
basins in the creek in the central portion of the permit area. Mr. Spady indicated the site is active every year
(intermittently) once the creek flows and redeposits sand and gravel in the work basins.
The operation appears to be following the approved mining plan. The creek banks were stable and fairly well
vegetated with native grasses and forbs. The disturbances by the operation appeared to be minimal and located
within the approved permit boundary. No problems were observed.
This concludes the report.
