The slow release organic fertilizer will be applied either right before or after seeding at an
application rate of 1,200 lbs. /acre. It will be a top dressing onto the soil surface. If
recommended by the commercial reclamation contractor, it may be applied just prior to seeding
so that there is a slight incorporation of the organic fertilizer into the soil during drill seeding.
The soil sample was collected at random locations around the Barnhart Pit. The soil sample is a
composite sample.

Spring 2019, Barnhart Gravel Pit:
➢ Drill seed grain sorghum directly into the ground surface between mid-May and the 1 st of
June.
➢ To the extent possible, the drill rows should run north and south on flat areas. Once the
sorghum germinates, it will shade and compete with annual weeds. Some weed
management may be required to control broadleaf s during the summer growing season.
➢ Spray grain sorghum in late August to mid-September with Round-up to kill sorghum
and residual weeds. This should be done after sorghum heads out but prior to seed set.
