Introduction
Lewicki and Associates, PLLC (GLA) was contracted by Colorado Rose Red, Inc. to conduct a
geotechnical analysis to address concerns raised during the Colorado Division of Reclamation,
Mining, and Safety (DRMS) Amendment 1 Review of the Colorado Rose Red Granite Quarry.
Geotechnical analysis includes:joint stability of the underground workings, pillar design and
underground structural integrity, and joint and slope stability of the proposed surface quarry. The
Rose Red Quarry is located 7.6 miles northwest of Lyons, Colorado along Cheyenne Mountain
Road approximately 900 feet east of Highway 36/St. Wain Drive (Figure 1).
Geologic mapping, underground data collection, and analysis of field relationships was
completed by M. Katie Todt, P.G. and David Mosch, Q.P. on September 6, 2018. Following the
field investigation, data was extensively analyzed to determine appropriate safety factors for
mining by Ben Miller, David Mosch, and Katie Todt of GLA.
Underground field work consisted of fracture and joint measurements and mapping of the
underground workings. Surface field work includes fracture and fault analysis as well as detailed
observations of structures revealed via surface weathering as well as the drill and blast mining
method utilized in the 111 c portion of the proposed permit area. A series of four core of holes
were drilled and analyzed by GROUND Engineering, Inc. along the road on the south end of the
proposed pit. Data from these holes, specifically laboratory results of rock strength parameters,
contribute to the recommendations of this report.
This report includes stereonets of surface and underground fracture orientations, mapping of the
underground workings, fracture mapping of the underground highwall, pillar design and safety
factors, and surface slope stability analysis.
Rose Red Quarry Geotechnical Report 2
