h;
Figure 2. Site wide view of the Rose Red Quarry including the currently permitted 110
underground dimension stone mining above and the previously permitted 111 drill and blast
surface mining area in the foreground. View to the north, photo captured 180906.
Rock Mass Properties
The entire site is composed of Middle Proterozoic Silver Plume Granite,the basement rock
throughout the Lyons, Colorado area. The Silver Plume Granite features equigranular and
porphyritic granite with subhedral microcline phenocrysts which gives the Rose Red Quarry
dimension stone its characteristic red hue (Figure 2; Punongbayan et al., 1989). Rock mass
properties utilized were determined by testing core samples from the four core holes drilled at
the south end of the 111 c area. Since the pit is only 700 feet long and the granitic rock mass in
the underground openings appears to be the same as the substrate farther south,the results of the
four known core sample testing are sufficient to be used for the entire property.
Rose Red Quarry Geotechnical Report 4 GrM Iw icki and Associate,PLIA!
