• determined at each transect as the total hits on species, rock, litter or bare
ground divided by the total number of possible hits (30) times 100. The mean
and standard deviation percent cover was determined at each reference area.
Herbaceous Production Measurements
At 50 sample. locations within each reference area, herbaceous species
(grasses, grasslike fortis and half-shrubs) production was determined by har-
vesting the above ground living biomass in a 1x1 meter plot. Species were
clipped and separated in labeled bags, oven dried at 105°C and weighed to the
nearest tenth of a gram. Production data was expressed on a gm/m2 and lbs./
acre basis. Relative production was determined as the percent production of
species "x" divided by the total production for the reference area times 100.
• Woody Species Oensity Measurements
Woody species (shrubs and trees) density was determined by counting the
number of individuals rooted within a 1x30 meter quadrat. A test for an
adequate sample was computed after 30 samples were taken, and if achieved,
sampling ceased. If sample adequacy was not achieved, sampling continued
until either an adequate sample was achieved or 50 samples were taken.
Sample Adequacy
Sample adequacy for all data was computed following Snedecor and Cochran,
1967 as
m = tZs2
D2
~_:
-3-
