• INTRODUCTION
The following report presents a baseline vegetation inventory of three
reference areas at the Eagle Mine complex located in Moffat County, Colorado.
The objective of this report and study was to obtain a baseline of the vegeta-
tion within the three reference areas to serve as a basis for judging reclama-
tion success as per Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board (CMLRB) rules and
regulations. In order to accomplish this task, data were obtained to document
vegetation cover, herbaceous production, woody species density, and a list of
species within the reference areas.
The three reference areas were previously selected by Empire Energy
personnel. The study plan was designed by Empire Energy Corporation with
• input from Horner-White Ecological Consultants, Inc.
METHODS
Species List
A list of species was compiled from specimens collected in standard
herbarium manner during July, 1981 and from species noted during other phases
of the field work. Field identifications were made using a floral key by
Harrington 1964. Verification of specimens was made by Dr. William Weber of
the University of Colorado Museum. Only species observed within the three
reference areas were listed. The authority for scientific names are from
Weber and Johnston 1976 and common names follow Nickerson et. al. 1976.
Reference Area Sample Design
• At each reference area a random sample of the vegetation was obtained by
~_. the following procedure. A boundary line along the longest side of each
-1-
