§2.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING
ACTIVITIES -- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
The herbaceous understory in the transition zone is sparse, consisting
of cheatgrass, western wheatgrass, Fendler bluegrass, and forbs such
as lambstongue grounsel and bedstraw. Additionally, a few large
barren areas occur in the pinyon-juniper zone near or on the crowns of
fhe ridges. These sites are mostly bare ground and the only vegetation
is widely dispersed forbs common to such disturbed arid areas.
•
Riparian: The riparian vegetation type occurs near the train loadout
area along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The typical trees and
shrubs composing riparian vegetation are narrowleaf cottonwood,
plains cottonwood, box elder, birch, alder, hawthorn, red osier
dogwood, virginsbower, wildrose, and many species of willows. Aspen
may sometimes occur along streams as a riparian plant, mainly at
elevations lower than that at which it is normally found. Salt cedar
occurs along rivers and streams at lower elevations, below 6,000 feet.
Herbaceous species include many different grasses, forbs, and
sedges. The specific composition of herbaceous species in riparian
vegetation varies considerably with altitude.
(5) A literature and herbarium search (for the Bowie No. 1 Mine permit
application), as well as a plant inventory conducted prior to 1981,
indicated that no endangered or threatened plants were in the area of
the disturbed mine facilities.
Two cacti, the spineless hedgehog cacti and the Uinta Basin hookless
cacti, are listed as threatened and endangered in Delta County.
Neither of these plants were located on the proposed permit area
during inventories and literature searches conducted by the Natural
Heritage inventory and the BLM (U.S.D.O.I), Bureau of Land
Management, 1983). The operator therefore, believes that operations
at the train loadout and stockpile areas will not impact rare or
endangered plant species.

TR-20
2.04 - 30
3101
