§2.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING
ACTIVITIES --MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
(2j Land Capability
(a) The structures within the permit boundary consist of the train
loadout facility, a coal stockpile area, a State Highway,
county roads, several residences and orchards. Much of the
arable land contained within the permit boundary, not
occupied by roads, residences or the loadout and stockpile,
is irrigated and in orchard production. The principal orchard
crops are apples, pears, peaches and cherries. Because of
the shortness of the growing season and frost that occurs in
early spring, crops can be severely damaged.
Under a high level of management, the land suitable for
orchard crops could yield 750 bushels per acre of apples,
550 bushels per acre of peaches, 800 bushels per acre of
cherries or 500 bushels per acre of pears.
• The foregoing discussion of land capability and productivity
was predominantly obtained from the Soil Survey of Paonia
Area published by the Soil Conservation Service.
The Soil Survey of Paonia Area, published by the Soil
Conservation Service, additionally describes the present and
potential productivity of the soils which have been disturbed
by the existing operations and continued operation of the
train loadout and stockpile area. These present and
potential productivities and soil types are as follows (as
reproduced from the Bowie No. 1 mine permit):
Train Loadout Areas
Aqua Fria stony loam, 3-12% slope. Capability subclasses
IVs, irrigated and Vls, non-irrigated. Native vegetation
composed of pinyon-juniper, shrubs and grasses. Potential
vegetation in the understory is a grass community with
scattered browse species. Grazing potential is moderate for
TR-20 2.04 - 2 3/01
