Morrison Quarry October 22, 2018
Permit No. M-1973-021 (AM06) Page 2 of 2
Since the proposed mining depth of 6,195 feet in the South Quarry is considerably lower than the above
referenced groundwater surface elevations, it seems likely that this mining operation would result in the
exposure of groundwater. Because it can be difficult to tell the source of water in an excavation, this office
requests that the applicant be required to install piezometers around the South Quarry to measure the
groundwater level and demonstrate that the excavation is not exposing groundwater. If mining at the site
exposes groundwater, the excavation is considered a well and will require an approved substitute water supply
plan or decreed plan for augmentation to replace the evaporative losses to the stream system. All mining at
the site must cease and all exposed groundwater must be backfilled until such time as the applicant has
obtained such approvals.
If stormwater runoff is intercepted by this operation and is not diverted or captured in priority, it must be
released to the stream system or infiltrate into the ground within 72 hours; otherwise the operator will need to
make replacements for evaporation.
The applicant may contact the State Engineer's Office with any questions.
