Colorado Parks and Wildlife has determined that there are three main potential wildlife concerns
at the proposed mining operation: a bighorn sheep herd, Elk winter ranging, and a peregrine
falcon nest.
7_1 Bighorn Sheep Herd
A Tier 1 bighorn sheep herd passes through the site in its travels south to north. According to
Joseph Walter(CPW District Manager),the herd does not occupy the meadow to be mined, as
the species prefers the mountain slopes. Based on discussions with Mr. Waters during the pre-
operation inspection, the greatest impacts to the sheep will be vehicle collisions on the access,
and general impacts to the calving season (April 15 to June 30). Based on the CPW provided
species specific best management practices, the following mitigation commitments are made:
• Stripping of topsoil to open up new mining areas will not occur between December 1 to
June 30.
• No domestic sheep of goats will be used to manage vegetation within the operation.
• The revegetation of the site will include CPW-identified native shrubs, grasses, and forbs
appropriate for the sheep.
• A speed limit of 10 mph will be maintained onsite at all times for all equipment.
• Clear signage will be installed along the access to alert all drivers to be mindful of
crossing sheep.
7.2 Elk
Elk winter range is identified at the proposed mine location. Based on discussions with Mr.
Walter, the primary impact to the elk will be new disturbances during the winter. Therefore, the
applicant will make the following mitigation commitments:
• Stripping of topsoil to open up new mining areas will not take place between December 1
to June 30.
• Operational traffic will be restrict to 10 am to 3 pm from December 1 to April 15.
• Aggressive non-native grasses and shrubs will not be used in the reclamation seed mix.
773 Peregrine Falcon Nest
DMR1Ani.6i anJ lsuiu
September 2018 H-2
