Box 533
Pueblo,CO 81002
Dear Mr. Welte:
On June 14,the BLM Colorado River Valley Field Office (CRVFO) Geologist inspected the Dotsero
Quarry and cited weed control as an issue. The Mineral Materials Compliance inspection report required
the following corrective action:
Mayne Block and Stone must perform noxious and invasive weed eradication within the permit
area. If the operator elects to treat the permit area with herbicide,Mayne Block and Stone or its
contractor must submit a Pesticide Use Proposal and receive approval prior to conducting weed
spraying activities. Reseeding and soil amendments may be needed in the future if revegetation is
unsuccessful.
As of the current date, the Colorado River Valley Field Office has not been contacted regarding a
Pesticide Use Plan for Dotsero Quarry and no weed treatment has occurred at the site.
Per the Conditions on pages 6-7 of C0140-2008-114 CX Remarks/Mitigation as incorporated into the
stipulations for contract COC-066169:
"Following completion of extraction operations in a particular area, the applicant would reclaim
disturbed areas in accordance with the existing mining and reclamation plan and to the
satisfaction of the State of Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety and the Bureau
of Land Management Glenwood Springs Field Office. These activities shall occur the first fall
following completion of mining extraction.
Your approved Dotsero Quarry reclamation plan states:
"Revegetation will be carries out in such a way to establish a diverse, effective and long-lasting
vegetative cover that is capable of self-regeneration without continued dependence on irrigation,
soil amendments, or fertilizers. The idea is to create a vegetative cover that is at least equal in
extent to the cover of the natural vegetation prior to mining."
1
