Technical Revision—State Pit M-1990-112
Weed Control Plan
During an inspection of the site on 2/28/2018, Tamarisk were noted on portions of the reclaimed
areas of the site. Due to this tamarisk growth, a weed control plan has been implemented for the
site to control the weed and eradicate it from the site. This plan was developed in accordance
with Section 3.1.10(6) of the Mineral Rule and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for the Extraction of Construction Materials.
The first line of defense in preventing noxious weeds is through prevention of introduction onto
the site. This will be done in the following ways:
• Seed mixtures that are used for reclamation purposes will be free of noxious weeds.
• Hay or straw used for reclamation purposes will be free of noxious weeds.
• Periodic inspections of the newly reclaimed areas will be performed to ensure noxious
weeds do not take hold. If any noxious weeds are located, they will be treated according
to the control plan listed below.
If noxious weeds need to be treated onsite, they will be treated in one of two ways; chemically or
mechanically. The first line of defense will be through mechanical removal of any noxious
weed, including tamarisk. Mechanical removal will be done through either hand pulling,
mowing, disking or using heavy equipment. When mechanical methods are used, Fremont
Paving and Redi Mix, Inc. will ensure that the entire root system of the noxious weed and/or
tamarisk is removed. Disking the area may be necessary to eradicate perennial species, as their
root systems tend to be more extensive.
If mechanical methods are unsuccessful, chemical control can be used. Herbicides may be
applied at the specified times for maximum benefit. Fremont Paving and Redi Mix, Inc. will
work closely with the Turkey Creek Conservation District to ensure the proper chemical and
time is utilized for maximum benefit and eradication of the noxious species. Herbicide
treatments can be done in small areas or larger areas throughout the reclaimed areas, as
warranted by the spread of the noxious weed. Care will be taken in choosing the appropriate
herbicide, to ensure that a selective, broad-leaf mixture is utilized so as to protect surrounding
grass species.
