67a
Weed Management Plan
New Elk Coal Company's weed management goal is to prevent weeds from becoming established and to
prevent the spreading of noxious weeds that may exist. Noxious weeds will be controlled by the
guidelines for the Management of Noxious Weeds on Coal Mine Permit Areas as well as follow the
Colorado Weed Management Act (Act 35-5.1-115) in case species of concern update over time. Mine
disturbed areas will be monitored for infestations of Noxious Weeds.
Whenever practical, mechanical control will be the control of preference. More aggressive infestations
have been effectively controlled with Roundup mixed @ 2.66 oz per gallon of water, applied directly on
the plant. As this is a non -restricted pesticide/herbicide, Roundup will be the preferred method of
chemical control for annual and biannual thistle infestations.
Mechanical control of Canadian thistle, a perennial, generally is ineffective. Thus, Canadian thistle will
be cotrolled by an application of either Milestone, Banvel (dicamba) or a combination of 0.5 qt. Banvel
plus 1.0 qt. of 2,4-D where Banvel alone proves ineffective.
NECC will use localized seeding with the appropriate seed mix to promote healthy vegetation coverage
on treated areas.
The following table provides a list of target noxious weeds and Dr. Beck's (CSU) recommended
herbicide.
Noxious Weed
Herbicide
African rue (Class A weed)
Polaris
Diffuse knapweed
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Russian knapweed
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Spotted knapweed
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Leafy Spurge
Tordon
Dalmation toadflax
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Yellow toadflax
Tordon
Musk thistle
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Scotch thistle
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Canadian thistle
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Hounds tongue
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Oxeye Daisy
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Poison Hemlock
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Field Bindweed
Milestone/ 2,4-D
Mullein
Milestone/ 2,4-D
(2)(t) Disposal of Debris, Acid -Forming and Toxic Forming Materials
Section 2.05 MR -125 8/15/2018
