The historic crop consumptive use analyses utilized the Modified
Blaney-Criddle calculations, with adjustment for elevation, and a soil moisture budget model. Climatic data
used for the calculations is described in Section 2.1, above.
In summary, the following steps were taken for each analysis of historic crop consumptive use:
1. Irrigation diversion records (obtained from the State's CDSS website) were limited, when
necessary, to reflect the corresponding decreed rate of diversion. For example, the McKay
Ditch diversion records for June 1966 show a monthly diversion of 1,200 AF; however the
McKay Ditch's decreed amount is 18.67 cfs, or 18.67x30x1.9835 = 1,101 AF. Therefore,
diversions for June 1966 were limited to 1,101 AF.
2. An analysis of the active call records, based upon data available through the Colorado Decision
Support Center's (CDSS) web-site, was conducted to determine the percent of time during
each month of the study period when the irrigation water right was out-of-priority. The CDSS
web-site provides active call records for the period of 1987 through present.
3. Monthly irrigation requirements for pasture grass/hay were calculated for each year of the study
period;
4. Monthly amounts of water delivered to the fields were estimated based upon the adjusted
diversion records and assuming a 10% infiltration loss for ditch lengths in excess of 5,000 feet
and 5%for ditches with lengths less than 5,000 feet. A 60% application efficiency factor(flood
irrigation)was also assumed for the calculations;
5. The soil moisture holding capacity was assumed to be 0.15 and the crop rooting depth was
estimated at 3 feet;
6. Field delivery amounts were then compared with irrigation water requirements to calculate the
historic C.U.
5 Bishop Associates, 1983; Wright Water Engineers, 1996.
9 :NNRESOURCE
