• during the June 1979 field period. These areas were searched with the aid of binoculars
and spotting scope and all raptor nests observed were checked, to the extent possible, for
signs of nesting activity.
A raptor nesting search was also initiated from May 25-28, 1982 on an area which included
the Seneca II -W permit area and a one mile buffer zone. The location of all raptor nests
observed within this area was recorded and the status and productivity of each nest
obtained. The species of raptor utilizing each nest as well as the nesting substrate were
also recorded. All raptor nests located within the Seneca II -W vicinity are plotted on
Exhibit 11-3.
In addition, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service also conducted aerial nesting
surveys within the vicinity of the Seneca II -W permit area during June 1982. Cliff
nesting searches and the determination of raptor production were simplified with the use
of a helicopter.
Came Birds. All game bird species observed during field activities were recorded as to
• species, location, and habitat. Colorado Division of Wildlife information pertaining to
the known existance of any sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) strutting ground or
sharp -tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus) dancing ground within the Seneca II -W study
area was also obtained.
In addition, searches for sharp -tailed grouse dancing grounds on the Seneca II -W permit
area was accomplished during the early morning hours of May 27, 1982 by Mr. Jim Haskins
(CDOW Conservation Officer). Parabolic microphone equipment was utilized on the search.
This equipment greatly magnifies the characteristic vocalization of dancing sharptails
enabling the biologist to more readily identify and locate important breeding areas. Four
stops were made throughout the Seneca II -W permit area to listen for dancing grouse.
Passerines. Breeding bird surveys were conducted within the Seneca II -W study area during
the period of May 28 to 31 of 1974. Transects were walked through major habitats during
the early morning hours of each census day. Bird species observed and total numbers of
each bird species were recorded.
. A second nongame bird survey was conducted within the Seneca II -W study area on September
25, 1974. During this survey day, a large portion of the study area was covered by
11
