-~,_ ,,
• Production - Sagebrush/Snowberry vegetation type. Here, very heavy growth of
western bracken fern in four of the sample plots caused a lack of comparability to be
statistically indicated. Removal of these plots from the calculation resulted in
indication of comparability. The area in which Sagebrush/Snowberry stands are
infested with bracken is along the toeslope in upper Hubberson Gulch (southeast corner
of the permit areal.
• Cover - Western Wheatgress/Alkali Sagebrush vegetation type. Here, lack of
comparability between the affected and reference areas resulted from the prevalence of
heavy grass caused by the late summer rains in the extended reference area. Normally,
herbaceous vegetation growth in this vegetation type is curtailed by midsummer, as the
clay soils fail to become deeply wetted by thundershowers. In 1997, above average
moisture allowed continued herbaceous growth on much of the area, and it is
speculated that some areas had become more deeply wetted and supportive of
continued plant growth than others. The 11-W South Extension area includes more the
ridgetop occurrence of this type, while the reference area includes more long, gentle
west-facing slopes, where there may be subtle tendencies in the substrate to receive
moisture more effectively.

63 Revised 9/98
... -.~-.~.w..el~d~::.:~~....e~..u:.'_ia..::~.'.L:,:=~~~-t:w~-~ ...a..~A.o._-:~"fnNisgwiit'a~tYf-c~...-.'_._...._is:~.:_s~,r.~,_.u.~aiL`>Y''-:c ~'!.3k.°='~:.;"- ,aG~dYP--o:~
