Due to the schedule constraints, the bench-scale tests will
be performed in parallel with the pilot-scale tests. The same water that will be treated by
the passive water treatment system will be used for the bench and pilot scale testing.
Bench-scale test results will support the design and operation of the pilot-scale system.
Water for the bench-scale tests will be collected from the Mine portal prior to
conducting the jar testing and transported to the lab. Water for the pilot-scale system
will be diverted directly from the Mine portal into the system. Table 8 provides an
overview of these tests, which will be described in more detail in subsequent sections.
Table 8: Overview of Testing
Overview T
Bench-Scale— • Determine appropriate iron-based • Jar testing in lab
Coagulation/ coagulant for the water setting using a 6-jar
Flocculation/ • Identify dosing range at different surface test apparatus
Settling overflow rates
• Optimize coagulation,flocculation,and • Large containers with
sedimentation design base multiple cells to
• Evaluate substrate mixture for bioreactor simulate MWP,
• Assess time to achieve metals reduction bioreactor, and
targets wetlands
• Evaluate optimal liquid carbon source and
Pilot-Scale concentration required
• Assess performance in cold, upset, and
seasonal conditions
• Assess the effect/benefits of inoculation
and potential nutrient feed to address
deficiencies identified through testing
A proposed schedule for this work is shown in Figure 3.
Treatability Study Work Plan 14 February 8,2018
