Preliminary Report for Data Recovery at Site BK -2-062518 Colowyo Coal Company
4.0 CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION
Tetra Tech executed the HPTP field work to obtain data in support of the project specific research
design. The site's horizontal extent is defined as the immediate area around each feature within
the Limit of Disturbance. Vertically the features appear to occur approximately 20 cm below
ground surface, but not on the same stratigraphic level. The two features appear to not be
associated with one another. The spatial distribution is random with no definable patterns or
correlation to the overall landform. The features are theorized to be short term hearths used for
resource processing, warmth, and light. Laboratory analysis has the potential to provide further
evidence of regarding feature function and association.
Addition results from data recovery field efforts:
• The recovered features are generally intact with moderate taphonomic modification from
root action and burrowing animals.
• The STPs did not encounter evidence of additional cultural component(s) within the intact
sediments remaining inside the Limit of Disturbance.
• No human remains or funerary objects were encountered during field work.
Tetra Tech completed data recovery field work on both features and will process collected
material in our laboratory. The field work portion of the HPTP has been completed and the data
potential at the locality has been exhausted. It is recommended that Colowyo be allowed to
continue topsoil stripping for the culvert construction within the site in conformance with Exhibit 5
and Exhibit 5, Item 10. The remaining topsoil stripping will be monitored by a qualified
archaeologist and, though unlikely to occur, further cultural resource discoveries at the site will be
handled as outlined in the HPTP (Karpinski 2018).
Tetra Tech July 2017
