3.8.2 Loadout
A soils resource inventory was conducted for the land in and around
areas developed as a coal Loadout facility by the Snowmass Coal
Company. The purpose was to describe soil availability and suitabi-
lity for uses necessary for environmental protection in the develop-
ment of the Loadout facility. Criteria established in the
"Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Coal
Mining" and in Guideline Number 1 of the Wyoming Department of
Environmental Quality were considered in the preparation of this
report. The basic survey legend included in this section was provided
by the Soil Conversation Service, along with technical information
from their unpublished soil survey notes.
The field survey work and sampling was conducted in June, 1980. Map
unit descriptions were verified by observations of test holes and
exposed profiles in numerous locations. In several instances,
• descriptions have been rewritten from the Soil Conservation Service
notes to match more closely the observations of the specific soils of
the project area. According to the field observations, map unit boun-
daries were drawn on a recent high contrast aerial photograph of
1:6,000 scale, Drawing D-4-15.
Representative locations were selected for sampling soil in each unit
affected by construction of the Loadout facility. lest holes were dug
and profile descriptions were verified at each location. Table
3.8.2-3 shows these descriptions for each sampling site. A soils
legend is given in Table 3.8.2-1. Samples were composited from soil
taken in the vicinity of each sampling location. Samples were mixed
thoroughly and air dried immediately. Upon drying, samples were each
divided into two parcels, one to be sent to the Colorado State
University Soils Testing Laboratory in Ft. Collins, and the other to
be stored in a sample archive. At the laboratory, the samples were
sieved and prepared according to their standard procedures. Results
•
3-109
