92F. Argic Pachic Cryoborolls-Cryobo rolls complex, 25 to 65 percent
• slopes. These soils are steep to very steep soils on mountain
sideslopes at elevations of 7,800 to. 9,000 feet. The two components
of this unit are fine, montmorillonitic, Argic Pachic Cryoborolls, 60
percent, and fine-loamy, mixed, Boralfic Cryoborolls, 25 percent.
These soils occur on the north facing portion of the ridge along the
vent pipe road corridor. Included in this unit are about 15 percent
soils that lack a thickened dark surface layer and soils that lack a
thick highly leached surface layer.
Both soils are deep and formed in colluvium and residuum from inter-
bedded sandstone and shales. Typically, the Argic Pachic Cryoborolls
have a surface layer that is very dark brown loam about 20 inches
thick. The subsoil is brown gravelly clay aobut 16 inches thick. The
substratum, to a depth of 60 inches or more, is brown gravelly clay
loam.
Permeability of this soil is slow. Effective rooting depth is more
• than 60 inches. Available water capacity is 0.14 to 0.16 in.{in.
Surface runoff is high and the erosion hazard is high. Topsoil suita-
bility is poor due to steep slopes.
The Boralfic Cryoborolls typically have a surface layer that is very
dark grayish brown loam about 10 inches thick. The subsurface layer
is brown loam about 6 inches thick. The subsoil is dark grayish brown
clay loam about 24 ihches thick. The substratum is brown clay loam
that extends below 60 inches.
Permeability of this soil is moderate. Effective rooting depth is
greater than 60 inches. Available water capacity is 0.16 to 0.20
in./in. Surface runoff is high and the erosion hazard is high.
Topsoil suitability is poor due to steep slopes,
•
3-107
