The permit area and adjacent areas are located on the upturned edge of <br />a monocline, commonly called the Grand Hogback, at tfie eastern edge of <br />the Piceance Basin. The various formations dip westward into the <br />basin. This "strip" of exposed formations is most likely the recharge <br />area for the various water-bearing zones found in the permit area, <br />particularly along the various drainages. <br />Exposures of these same formations, except the uppermost Mesaverde <br />Formation, are not seen within Colorado to the west. Also, the permit <br />area is not connected hydraulically to any of the same rock units to <br />the east. <br />n <br />U <br />• <br />3-90 <br />
